Local children don’t have to travel far to get to their desks. Three public schools located in North Hollywood take kids from kindergarten through twelfth grade. With educational excellence as their goal, an elementary, middle, and high school supply the coursework, activities, and sports programs that promote a well-rounded student.

Lankershim Elementary School, “Lair of the Lankershim Lions” at 2520 Bakman Avenue in North Hollywood, provides students from kindergarten through fifth grade with opportunities to achieve their highest academic and social potential, encourages parental involvement, and celebrates diversity while fostering discipline.

More than 80 educators oversee the education of sixth to eighth graders at Walter Reed Middle School, a California Distinguished School, located at 4525 Irvine Avenue, North Hollywood. In addition to academic coursework, students participate in artistic endeavors including band and choral programs and a wide range of extracurricular activities and sports programs.

North Hollywood High School, at 5231 Colfax Avenue, North Hollywood, serves about 3,600 students living in North Hollywood, Sun Valley, Studio City, and Toluca Lake. In addition to preparing students for college and post-grad vocations, the school offers its students opportunities to enroll at two magnet schools including the Biological Science Magnet and the Highly Gifted Magnet. Students can also prepare for careers in the fields of education and transportation by attending classes associated with ABLE: Acquiring Bilingual Leaders in Education and the Transportation Career Academy. The 5.5-acre Farm, located on the high school campus, supplies hands-on learning opportunities for students interested in horticulture and animal sciences. A long list of culturally diverse and interest-related clubs accommodate students with an affinity for everything from computers to drama and art.

Residents of the Universal City-North Hollywood area are just a quick drive from the country’s top-rated institutions of higher learning.

California State University Northridge (CSUN), a member of the 20-campus California State University system, is the third largest college or university in Los Angles County and serves almost 30,000 students seeking bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Offering majors in more than 50 areas of study, CSUN boasts a 353-acre campus ideally situated in the northern San Fernando Valley.

Los Angeles Valley College, a member of the Los Angeles Community College system located in Van Nuys, was founded in 1949 and presently employs 250 full-time and 300 part-time instructors. With an enrollment of more than 17,000 students, the college offers transfer programs, vocational training, and adult education classes, while scheduling recreational and cultural activities for both the school’s students and community residents.

Other nearby colleges and universities within commuting distance include: Kings College and Seminary, National University, University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), University of Southern California (USC), Pepperdine University’s Valley Campus, California Institute of the Arts, California Institute of Technology, and Woodbury University.

Universal City North Hollywood visitors and residents practice and express their faith at numerous temples, churches, and synagogues. Catholic parishes, Protestant churches, and Jewish, Buddhist, and Ba’Hai congregations hold regular services. The churches, their members, and church-related organizations sponsor a number of social events as well as contribute to the community’s welfare through volunteer programs and social outreach activities.

The NoHo Arts District Farmers Market (nohomarket.org) on Saturdays offers freshness and fun every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the block of 5200 Bakman (between Magnolia Boulevard to the South and Weddington Street to the North). It is a California Certified Farmers Market as well as a market for arts and crafts. It is conveniently located just steps away from the North Hollywood Metro stop on the Red Line. It is an open-air street market with approximately 20 farmers, 20 local artisans, and 30 vendors who provide baked goods and prepared foods. The NoHo Market also hosts street musicians every Saturday, as well as local nonprofit community organizations and free special events for the community.
