An important element toward having a vigorous community and economy is good health. Community organizations, particularly chambers of commerce can be an essential part of promoting and accomplishing good health in at least their own community.
The Universal City North Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, recognizing the great benefits of healthy life styles will be holding its second annual health fair, "Fit for Business, Fit for Life," most likely on October 6, 2013.
In spite of the hot weather, our first annual health fair, held on September 30, 2012, enjoyed by its participants and attendees, was successful and set a valuable foundation for the growth and public benefits to be provided by our future health fairs. As a lead up to becoming healthy adults, our member YMCA will be holding its 2nd Annual Try Y Dash Fitness Challenge and Healthy Kids Day at Woodley Park on Saturday, April 27.
Besides the importance of good physical health is good fiscal health. That's why the Universal City North Hollywood Chamber of Commerce has an active Government Affairs Committee and actively participates with the United Chambers of Commerce Government Affairs Committee. Being well rounded in our approach to how government affects our communities and fiscal health, I thank the Neighborhood Council Valley Village for joining our chamber. That helps expand our approach to a variety of matters.
A national matter that really needs our concern is that our at least $16 trillion national debt amounts to over $51,000 a person debt. When interest rates rise to just 2% annually, over $1,020 per person of our annual tax revenue will have to pay interest on that debt before any of the needs of the country can be met. That is why the national deficit needs to be eliminated (without tax increases) and allow economic growth to benefit all.
Employers with 50 or more employees are required to display an updated federal family leave poster starting March 8.
The final rule outlining the requirement was issued just last week by the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) to implement federal laws expanding Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) protections.
The FMLA applies to employers with 50 or more employees. The FMLA changes were legislated by the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2010 and the Airline Flight Crew Technical Corrections Act (signed in 2009).
The regulations were issued for public comment February 15, 2012, and the comment period closed on April 30, 2012.
If you bought a poster set for 2013, you will need an updated one. These can be ordered from UCNH Chamber
